A triple threat match for the Strong Women’s Championship has been announced for Resurgence in Ontario, California next month. The decision came after a number one contender’s match at Windy City Riot between AZM and Mina Shirakawa ended in a double count-out. The referee stopped the match when neither woman could answer the 20-count after Shirakawa delivered a tornado DDT outside the ring, leaving both competitors visibly frustrated and Mercedes Mone’s next challenger unclear.
Shortly before the main event of Windy City Riot, announcer Veda Scott revealed that Rocky Romero had made a definitive decision regarding the championship match at Resurgence. Instead of a standard singles contest, the Strong Women’s title match will now feature a three-way battle, with both Shirakawa and AZM set to challenge the current champion, Mercedes Mone.
Mone has prior history with both her upcoming opponents. She previously defeated Mina Shirakawa at Wrestle Dynasty in January, claiming Shirakawa’s Undisputed British Women’s title in a title-versus-title match. Additionally, at Sakura Genesis in 2023, Mone successfully defended her IWGP Women’s Championship in a triple threat match against both AZM and Hazuki. This pre-existing narrative adds further intrigue to the upcoming three-way encounter at Resurgence.
Adding another layer to the Resurgence event, The Young Bucks made a video appearance during Windy City Riot. In their message, Nicholas and Matthew Jackson directly addressed the Bullet Club War Dogs, noting their absence from the current Resurgence card. The Young Bucks then issued a challenge to the War Dogs, teasing that they wouldn’t be coming alone and would be bringing “a couple of OG friends” with them, hinting at potential allies for their upcoming confrontation.
