The unfortunate and severe injury suffered by Kota Ibushi on a recent episode of AEW Collision has reportedly derailed significant creative plans for All Elite Wrestling. “The Golden Star” broke his femur during a match against Josh Alexander, which was taped on October 8 and aired on October 11. The injury, which will require surgery and a lengthy recovery period, happened at a time when a major new storyline involving Ibushi and his long-time “Golden Lovers” tag team partner, Kenny Omega, was just beginning to take shape.
According to a report from Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the original plan was to build towards a major tag team match pitting the Don Callis Family duo of Mark Davis and Josh Alexander against the reunited team of Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi. The seeds for this match were planted in the post-match angle of the Ibushi vs. Alexander match on Collision. After Ibushi was injured and the match was stopped, Mark Davis made his return to AEW and began to attack the fallen Ibushi.
This prompted Kenny Omega to run down to the ring, fight off both Davis and Alexander, and tend to his injured friend. This angle was reportedly intended to be the official start of the tag team feud. With Ibushi now out of action for the foreseeable future, those plans have been scrapped, and it is unclear what the new creative direction will be for Omega, Davis, and Alexander.
