The second meeting between Kenny Omega and Swerve Strickland is set — and this time, there’s a lot more at stake. On Wednesday’s Dynamite, Omega called out Strickland for a rematch with Strickland’s number one contender status for the AEW World Championship on the line. Strickland responded with a demand of his own, saying he wanted Omega to put up his executive vice president position — which would transfer to Strickland in the event of a Strickland victory. The match was confirmed with both stipulations attached.
Omega’s return at Revolution came at the right moment, as Strickland was about to drop Brody King onto cinder blocks following his victory over King. Omega intervened to make the save, immediately reigniting their rivalry. Strickland admitted during his Dynamite promo that he wasn’t even aware his win over King had earned him the number one contender spot — making the revelation that his shot is now on the line an added wrinkle.
Both Former AEW World Champions Have Unfinished Business After February’s Match
Their first meeting came on the February 18 edition of Dynamite, where Strickland defeated Omega before delivering a vertebreaker through the commentary table to write him off programming. Omega is now medically cleared and back with a point to prove. Next week’s Dynamite matchup sets up what could be one of the most consequential matches in AEW’s spring calendar.
