During a recent Twitch stream, AEW star Kenny Omega reignited discussions about a possible mixed tag team tournament within All Elite Wrestling. While acknowledging that AEW has previously featured mixed tag encounters, Omega indicated that the concept continues to be a topic of conversation backstage. He stated, “I keep hearing every now and then, it’s tossed around. Every now and then in AEW, there are rumblings about doing a mixed tag tournament. It’s something that keeps coming up.”
Omega further elaborated on his interest in such a tournament, revealing that his focus lies more on the intriguing possibilities of team dynamics rather than individual matchups. “I’d put more thought into what a tag team would look like rather than what a singles would look like,” he explained. His imagination then turned to the wealth of talent in the Japanese women’s wrestling promotion Stardom, as he enthusiastically named potential dream pairings. “Someone mentioned Mayu Iwatani — that’d be awesome. Having her team up with someone, or Starlight Kid teaming with someone — those are two of my favorites from Stardom right now.
There are countless others. Chihiro Hashimoto — she’s incredible, too.” Omega’s clear admiration for these Stardom stars has undoubtedly sparked excitement among fans who envision potential collaborations between AEW and the renowned Joshi promotion. While still a speculative concept, Omega’s comments suggest that a mixed tag team tournament remains a distinct possibility within AEW’s future programming, potentially opening the door for exciting and unique pairings.
