MJF Captures CMLL Light Heavyweight Championship in Mexico

AEW

In a stunning development, All Elite Wrestling star MJF has won a major championship in Mexico. In the main event of Friday night’s CMLL show from the legendary Arena Mexico, MJF defeated Averno to become the new CMLL World Light Heavyweight Champion, making him a champion in a major international promotion while still holding a guaranteed shot at the AEW World Title.

MJF Wins CMLL Light Heavyweight Championship

The main event of the CMLL Viernes Espectacular saw MJF challenge Averno, who had held the prestigious championship for over a year. The conclusion of the match was classic MJF. After working over Averno’s knee for several minutes, MJF found himself caught in a pinning combination. As he escaped, he used the opportunity to distract the referee and deliver a well-placed low blow to the champion. MJF then immediately re-applied the half Boston crab submission hold, and with his knee already weakened, Averno had no choice but to submit. The victory marks a huge milestone for MJF, adding a major world championship to his already impressive resume. His celebration was short-lived, however, as he was immediately confronted in the ring by Zandokan Jr. In a promo later posted to social media, it was announced that MJF’s first title defense will be against Zandokan Jr. on August 15.

A Feud Fueled by a Promise

This championship victory is the culmination of a months-long, deeply personal feud between MJF and the legendary CMLL icon, Mistico. The rivalry began earlier this summer and saw Mistico defeat MJF by disqualification at the AEW Grand Slam Mexico special. In the weeks following that loss, a furious MJF vowed to take away everything that Mistico held dear. Since Mistico was a former CMLL World Light Heavyweight Champion, MJF set his sights on the title as a way to hurt his rival by conquering his former territory and capturing a championship synonymous with his legacy. By defeating Averno, MJF has made good on his sinister promise.

A Champion in Two Worlds?

MJF’s victory in Mexico puts him in a unique and powerful position in the world of professional wrestling. He is now a reigning champion in one of Mexico’s top promotions while simultaneously holding the most valuable prize in All Elite Wrestling: the Casino Gauntlet contract, which guarantees him a match for the AEW World Championship at any time of his choosing. He earned that contract by winning the main event of the All In pay-per-view in July. His status as an international champion only adds to his leverage and prestige as he looms over the current AEW World Champion, “Hangman” Adam Page.

MJF’s shocking championship victory in Arena Mexico sends a powerful message to his rivals in both CMLL and AEW. His new status as a champion in Mexico adds another layer of intrigue to his character as he continues to hold the guaranteed AEW World Title contract. With his first title defense already set for August 15 against the formidable Zandokan Jr., the “Salt of the Earth” has firmly established his presence on the international stage, all while the clock ticks on his inevitable challenge for Hangman Page’s championship.
